Manufacturing Use Case Navigator

A structured starting point to identify the right manufacturing operations management solutions.

What is the Navigator?

The Navigator is a decision support instrument that enables manufacturers to understand which solutions are relevant for their specific situation and why.

The Navigator itself is not a product comparison or ranking. It is a use case-driven overview of MES solutions in the market that maps manufacturing needs to MOM solution characteristics. It starts with a structured description of context, scope, and priorities and produces outputs that support early orientation and structured selection.

The Navigator is used in MOMi Navigator services, from an initial longlist to full shortlisting and final recommendation support.

Why manufactures struggle with MES/MOM selection

  • Limited market overview
  • Conflicting internal priorities
  • Unclear use cases
  • Vendor-driven advice
  • Lengthy evaluation cycles

  • Longlist limitation
A longlist provides a structured head start. It does not replace a proper selection process including requirements definition, fitgap analysis, architectural validation, demonstrations, reference checks, and contracting.
  • Neutrality and responsibility
Information is based on vendor submissions and publicly available sources. MOMi does not endorse, rank, or recommend solutions. Customers remain responsible for due diligence and final selection decisions.
  • Commercial start conditions
Level 1 and Level 2 timelines start after full payment is received. MOMi expects full payment before starting.
Level 3 starts after receiving a purchase order and as agreed during the sales process.
  • Usage and distribution rights
The Flagship Report, in whole or in part, is provided for internal use within the purchasing organization only.
Sharing, redistribution, resale, or publication of the report or any part of its content to third parties is not permitted without prior written consent from MOMi.

FAQS

Answer: A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) system manages and controls manufacturing operations in real-time. These systems are essential for improving efficiency, traceability, and quality in production, enabling more informed decision-making, reducing costs, and optimizing production timelines.

Answer: To select the right solution, it’s crucial to understand your manufacturing needs, from production management to integration with other enterprise systems. Tools like the MOMi Navigator provide a structured starting point to assess which solutions are most relevant and align your business objectives with the capabilities of each platform.

Answer: Reducing selection time involves starting with a clear assessment of your company’s needs and setting up selection criteria based on specific use cases. Using a guidance tool like the MOMi Navigator can be key in quickly generating a list of relevant solutions, helping you make informed decisions and shorten the selection cycle.

Answer: When comparing manufacturing software solutions, the primary consideration is the degree to which the solution can act as an authoritative execution system within the manufacturing landscape. This includes its ability to consistently decide, enforce, and record what happens on the shop floor, rather than merely supporting or visualizing processes. Beyond architectural fit with existing IT and OT systems, the assessment should examine scalability, implementation complexity, and total cost of ownership. Integration with ERP, quality, planning, and supply chain systems is relevant insofar as it strengthens or weakens execution authority.
